Pinetown is named after Sir Benjamin Pine, Governor of Natal. In 1849 a hotel, the Wayside Hotel, was built here as halfway staging post between Durban and Pietermaritzburg. In 1850 the town was planned. Pinetown became a municipality in 1948.
Pinetown is situated at an elevation of 1,000 to 1,300 feet (305 to 395 m) in the hills adjoining Durban on the northwest.
